On December 19, 2023, my life changed in an instant. At 5:56pm, my husband suffered a seizure and that started the journey of the Little Plant Farmacy. In the next 24 hrs we would learn that he had a brain tumour the size of a grapefruit on his front right lobe. The neurologists believe it had been slowly growing for probably a decade. One very long surgery, 5 weeks of inpatient rehab and 6 weeks of daily doses of chemo and radiation later… we struggled to figure out what caused his brain cancer (yes, it was malignant). He eats healthy, has an active lifestyle, has never smoked, is of ideal body weight…and then we considered environmental factors. He works as a mechanical engineer where he is exposed daily to various types of vehicles, fuels and fumes. Despite having been told at his former job of the hazards associated with the chemicals he was being exposed to, as a young 24 year old, you think you are invincible and when no one else is wearing protective equipment, you’re not likely to be the first. That’s simply the reality of social pressures. We believe that the 8 years of exposure took it’s toll and so our focus became on eliminating any other possible carcinogens in our daily life. We switched to natural household cleaners, reduced our intake of processed foods, eliminated alcohol and incorporated natural bath and beauty products into our daily routine. Your skin is your largest organ. Why would you put a product with a long list of unpronounceable chemicals on the largest surface of your body? And so began the Little Plant Farmacy. Having a science background and a love of chemistry, I enjoyed creating formulations with various benefits and creating beautiful, healing soaps for my family. This branched out to lotions, lip balms, room deodorizers etc. I take pride in sourcing all-natural, organic or unrefined products. Everything is sustainably sourced, and eco-certified. I do not use palm oil. All animal products are purchased from local farmers who practice organic, grass-fed, humane farming practices. My supply companies are Canadian. I am proud of the products that I have made and am excited to share them with you. My target audience is like-minded people who want simple ingredients, sustainable products, who want to support local farmers and shop local.
